After this weekend, the MINI of Charleston SCCA Road Racing team is the top of the standings in four separate racing series. Robbie Davis ran his first race behind the wheel of the more powerful MINI Cooper S (previously Robbie was driving the standard MINI Cooper) at this weekend’s double South Atlantic Road Racing Championship event at Roebling Road Raceway in Pooler, Georgia. The challenging 2.0 mile 9 turn course hosted the SARRC series races with a Saturday/Sunday double race weekend. Saturday Robbie qualified 2nd in the SSC class but during the race reduced his lap times by several seconds and finished in the lead at the end of the 17 lap sprint race. As an early birthday present to himself (Rob turns 20 on Tuesday), Robbie qualified on the pole and dominated in Sunday’s race, despite suffering some cosmetic damage getting caught up in a multiple car accident that occurred in front of him on lap 9. With the SCCA’s mandated penalty weight of an additional 175 pounds, a 15-25 mph headwind on the front straight and Rob’s first time in this car, he got his lap times within 1 second of his Dad’s national pole position qualifying speed in March.
Rob’s double win moves him to first place in the current SARRC Showroom Stock C standings. Robbie also leads the SSC Class in the Carolina Cup Pro Series points and with his father and co-driver Brad Davis, leads the ECR Enduro Series points. Brad also is currently on top of the South East Division National Championship standings.
The team will be competing in another ECR enduro and National race at Daytona International Speedway on May 7th and 8th.
