Saturday August 7th, MINI Cooper S driver Brad Davis put the MINI of Charleston Showroom Stock B race car on the pole as the fastest qualifier in the Sports Car Club of America’s National Series Showroom Stock Race at Virginia International Raceway. VIR’s 3.27 mile course with 17 turns and 2 long straight-aways proved to be the perfect combination for the first ever class leading qualifying time for a “new” MINI at an SCCA National event. The field included the South East Division SSB points leader, the Daytona race winner and the 2nd place points driver from the Northeast Division. “It’s quite a different view from the front of the pack”, said driver Brad Davis. “I’ve led my class in qualifying at regional races, but never before at a National, and never before where my class was the top of the field.” Unfortunately the celebration was short-lived as Sunday in the race Brad missed his gear shift in turn 12 of the first lap and was hit in the right rear, puncturing the right rear tire sidewall. After limping the car back to the pits and changing a tire, the team finished a disappointing 2 laps behind the leader. After some minor body repair, the team will be ready to go to Mid-Ohio Raceway in September for the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. The race saw SSC Driver Tom Long move back into the SEDiv lead with a SSC class win and new track record. Over 125 MINIs from all over North Carolina drove from Flow MINI in Raleigh to VIR for lunch, track tours laps and a MINI racing talk from Brad.
August also started out well for the MINI of Charleston SCCA Solo Events Team, as driver Mark Chiles took the H Stock class honors at Wendover, Utah in a 2002 MINI Cooper and then went on to finished 2nd overall in the combined class Pro Challenge. Mark has proven his ability to win this year in both the G Stock MINI Cooper S and the H Stock MINI Cooper. The Solo National Championships in Topeka, Kansas are now only weeks away and Mark will be the driver to beat in whichever class he chooses to compete.
